The instructor selects from a menu of heart and lung conditions by wireless remote control. The Life/form® Ausculation Trainer and Smartscope Manikin presents itself as a real patient without visible auscultation sites. The student must palpate to identify correct auscultation locations, and will hear different heart and lung sounds as the Smartscope is moved to different locations on the manikin. A diagnosis of the condition selected by the instructor can be made by comparing the variations in sounds occurring at different sites. Just like a real patient!

Lung sounds can be detected at five anterior, 10 posterior, and two midaxillary locations. Students can practice auscultation at six anterior heart sites. The remote control does not have to be pointed directly at the manikin or SmartScope to operate. One remote control will operate multiple sets of SmartScopes and/or manikins simultaneously. Great for group instruction. Listen to the sounds by either using headpieces on SmartScope or by connecting to an amplifier/speaker (not included). Range on the unit is up to 100 feet of remote access.

Good Auscultation Trainer

We purchased one of these from a different vendor, and I like it pretty good. It is easy to operate and change sounds with the remote. The sounds are fairly realistic, as auscultation trainers go. The nursing students enjoy using it to learn about the various sounds. So I give it 4 stars for these qualities. The stethoscope must be positioned very precisely at the locations or else you hear silence. I found that I did have to apply the round stickers to the locations on the chest or else the students would get very frustrated trying to locate the exact position to hear the sounds. The SmartScope uses 2 AA batteries and since there is no switch to turn the SmartScope off/on, you must remove the batteries when you are finished using it for the session or else the batteries will die since the SmartScope stays on as long as the batteries are in place. My brand new batteries died overnight because I left them in place. I am ordering rechargeable batteries and a charger so at least I can recharge the batteries and still use them if I forget to remove them after each session. (FYI, The remote only changes the sounds and makes them discoverable when the SmartScope is placed over sensors in the chest at the correct locations.) I believe the sounds actually emanate from the SmartScope itself and not within the chest. All in all though, I am happy with this product and would buy it again.
